Vung Vieng Fishing Village

One of the most famous fishing villages in Bai Tu Long Bay is Vung Vieng fishing village which is located in the heart of the bay, about 24 kilometers from the mainland. This village is off the beaten tourist track as it is not so near to the popular Cat Ba Island which has lodging, beaches and nearby caves where most of the large tour companies and boats operate. You will not only be immersed in the quiet and peaceful location viewing the charming landscape, and discovering the cultural life of the fishermen but also will be instructed in the fine arts of sailing and casting fish nets.

The former name of the fishing village is Cap De with the unique places such as Vung Vieng sewer, Red Cong, or Cong Dam. Vung Vieng fishing village is the system of the floating village on sea. All of living activities happen on the boat. Previously, families lived on their boat and concentrated into a small bay to prevent the storm. Over time, the community has been organized into a village. They started constructing contemporary houses from wood, bamboo, or leaves. Then thatch roofed rafts with wooden walls were gradually replaced by the flat roofed rafts.

The residents here live on fishing and tourism activities, with food and water being transported from the mainland of a dozen kilometers from there. The colorful floating houses, home to multiple generations, give you a sense of the lifestyle of the local people, who are happy in spite of their modest circumstances.

Their houses are well equipped with TVs, cassette, radios, tables, chairs, beds like basic houses on land. You can imagine how interesting it would be when seeing the children go to “floating school” every morning on some bamboo basket boats on the emerald water like we’re driving a bike on the road. It is so funny and exciting!

Beyond the limestone peaks of the World Heritage site Halong Bay – Bai Tu Long Bay, long before tourists arrived, the Vung Vieng inhabitant has started their lives in coexistence with the sea. Settled down in a community 20 kilometers from the mainland, some of families been here for generations, been attached to the waves and tides, a floating life without a single concern about how much the house rental fee fluctuates.

Vung Vieng fishing village is one of the fishing villages owning the most unique architecture in the world. All houses here are floating house on the sea, surrounded by multi-shaped boats and rafts. Unlike the living in the mainland, almost activities of the locals here are closely associated with the waters and spectacular limestone islands. It is the difference on natural conditions and living habits that creates unique cultural features in Vung Vieng fishing village. In particular, the village is shielded by the natural limestone mountains with huge natural scenery, rolling rocks, jade green sea like an ink-painting picture. On the immense waves, the floating houses seemingly closely linking with each other, together with the fishing boats anchoring make the village a unique beauty nowhere can be found. Notably, the image of fishermen netting creates extremely tranquil and romantic scenery.

The beauty of Vung Vieng is the harmony of floating houses and the rafts mingling together. Coming here, tourists will easily be attracted by the small boats, the bamboo nets in doorstep, dark skin babies with cheerful smile and innocence. The peaceful and gentle scenery contained something fully intact.
